Excavation from the manhole to the road shall be done to a full depth of the manhole (6m deep) with a ramp shape resulting in lower level being on the road. c. Excavation shall be done such that a ramp is created on the road using TLB. Excavated materials shall be used as a berm to avoid water from entering in the exaction area. d. The berm can be created without compaction. e. Remove the berm after compaction of tar. f. All deep excavation/trench shall be supported from collapsing by the contractor, shall supporting method to comply with SANA 1200 DB earthworks. g. Contaminated material shall be disposed at hazardous landfill. (holfontein landfill), clean soil material can be disposed just outside Kendal power station and general waste shall be disposed in Kendal skip bins for general waste. 4. Compaction on the road (6m x 6m and 6m deep max) a. The soil below the road shall be compacted with 5G in layers of 150mm to 98% of MOD AASHTO density, Earthworks shall comply with SANS 1200DB. b. Sub-base layer of 150mm shall be compacted with C3, stabilized with 3% cement and be compacted in layer of 150mm to 98% of MOD AASHTO density. c. Compaction test shall be done for all layer to ensure that the specified density of 98% of MOD AASHTO is achieved. d. Base layer of 150mm shall consist of G2 material and be compacted in layer of 150mm to 98% of MOD AASHTO density e. Compaction shall be done with a suitable smooth roller, the contractor shall utilize a lab for testing of materials to ensure quality assurance. 5. Surface a. The failed tar asphalt shall be removed by cutting it saw cut in square sections b. Remove the old tar and dispose c. Replace the old asphalt by a new hot asphalt which shall be laid and be compacted. d. Compact the new asphalt such the strength is maximized and voids are minimized. e. Laying and compaction of asphalt shall be done under supervision of Eskom engineer. f.
