The substrate should be able to detect ß-Dglucuronidase activity to detect E. coli colonies and produce adark blue to violet in colour. No other colony should produce a similar colour, when incubated within the 24 hr recommended incubation period. The substrate should be able to detect ß- D-galactosidase activity to detect coliform colonies and produce a salmon-red in colour.
